Landscape-Hardscape
Salt Lake City speaks through the magnificent voice of the mountains. Once you’re there, all you need is the right spot to let your human spirit connect with nature. Finisterre Architecture was commissioned to develop a landscape on a private property overlooking a panoramic view of the valley. The owner’s request was to transform the backyard into something more meaningful than a leftover space. As an architecture firm with a trained eye, we immediately recognized the site—nested in the mighty mountains—as a unique challenge, especially since all materials had to be delivered up there without delays. We knew something remarkable was about to unfold.
We had just five weeks to develop the entire project from scratch to completion, including both design and construction. We truly burned the candle at both ends. Despite the tight deadline, we can proudly say that we always enjoy the work we do.
The sense of wonder was essential to this place—it precedes the understanding of the project itself. A custom pergola was chosen as the primary element for a reason: the space needed shade to encourage people to stay longer, without being intrusive. Water features were added on both sides to bring in the soothing sound of nature. The intention was to guide users toward the center of the space and highlight the immeasurable beauty of the view, where the mountains rise in the distance. Finally, we added a firepit. Fire, as a central design element, was never treated as a secondary feature. It was placed exactly where it belongs—at the heart of it all.
A wooden deck, along with elements such as gabion walls, was added to enhance the overall experience, and the result speaks for itself. The sense of wonder remained with us throughout the process, fueled by a deep respect for the site. By carefully selecting appropriate materials, we transformed a once-lonely backyard into a space full of life, character, and presence.
